Mnemonics

Rose Park artist Brigid Phelan is a relative newcomer to Adelaide.

With her family, Brigid moved from Sydney last year.  They are loving their new lifestyle – and Brigid loves the fact that she can ride her bike each day from her home to her studio in the city.

Like many artists, Brigid managed to squeeze her art into her busy life, working at it part-time.

‘It is only since moving to Adelaide,’ she says, ‘and since securing a grant, that I have been able to work full-time as an artist.’

‘I am very grateful to the Australia Council for the Arts for providing an Artstart Grant, which helps to pay the rent for studio space and allows me to work on building my studio practice.’

Brigid works from Tooth and Nail, an artist-run initiative in the city which houses studios, a gallery space and an open access printmaking facility.   Here, with the help of the grant, and a dedicated space to call her own, she is able to work full time on developing her practice as a mixed media and textile artist.

She exhibited late last year at Tooth and Nail Gallery, and again during the Fringe this year, as part of the Guildhouse Well Made exhibition.  She has also taken part in exhibitions interstate and in Singapore, where she lived for several years.

Mnemonics is her first solo exhibition and opens on Friday 21 March.

Here at Mrs Harris’ Shop, we are delighted to host Brigid and her gorgeous works.

‘The work is a collection of mixed media works on paper, board and textiles that incorporates my love of lace, scientific botanical illustrations and the whimsical and fleeting nature of memories’, she says.

FLYING FISH BOTANICAL

‘I take inspiration from my childhood – a lace christening dress, a piece of fabric, a floral lino pattern, or even a lasting impression,’ says Brigid.  ‘These are all references that build a connection between past and present.’

YELLOW WARBLERS

‘I am inspired by the organic nature of lace, by textures and patterns found in nature and on the streets and scientific illustrations of plants and birds.’

BP Dress 1

The exhibition is on show Saturdays and Sundays, 11am – 3pm, until 20 April, with the opportunity to meet Brigid on most of those days.
